PERIODIC TABLE CONNECTIONS
ByEven though we do not realize it chemistry is everywhere. Looking at the periodic table helps us understand the elements in everyday life. Whether they are metal or nonmetal, gas or solid.
The elements that I feel connect to the soil erosion due to deforestation in Haiti are hydrogen, oxygen and carbon.
Here is why I feel these elements are connected to my ecological issue.
Hydrogen – There would be lots of hydrogen in this environment because of the torrential downpours, hurricanes, and other tropical storms that Haiti has. The rain is what the causes the soil to erode because there are no trees to hold the soil in place. Therefore, the amount of hydrogen would be high because it is part of the water molecules.
Oxygen – There is a lack of oxygen in this environment because of the mass extinction of trees due to deforestation. There are not enough trees to convert the carbon back to oxygen. Although Haiti would get a small portion of oxygen from that rental downpour’s hurricanes other tropical storms because oxygen is part of the water molecules.
Carbon- Haiti has a high concentration of carbon because of their charcoal productions and the lack of trees there to produce oxygen. Charcoal is made up of almost pure carbon which would contribute to the amount of carbon Haiti has.
