Elements and the environment

By

Having and understanding of the periodic table can help you understand why we are lacking fresh drinking water, caused by corporations and population. Understanding the elements and what they are incorporated with can help us know what products should be released into the environment. If you aren’t aware of the elements, you will not know how they can affect people and the environment when exposed. When corporations are dumping waste into the waters, there is a chance that there will be elements that can affect the water quality. Like mercury, which can be found in fossil fuels ex. Coal and petroleum. Corporations can be releasing mercury into the environment not being educated on how it affects them. While doing this they may not know about mercury’s effect on fish, water and human health. Mercury can pollute water, which makes us lack fresh drinking water and is killing the fish, which is a source of food for many people. Lastly, human health comes into effect of mercury being exposed because of the neurological effects it has on people like nerve loss, cognitive impairment, and speech difficulties. This is one of the many elements that can affect people and the environment, that is why understanding the periodic table can help us understand this issue.

Which elements might be part of your ecological concern in the ecosystem of the area of your ecological issue? Explain your choice/choices.

  • Bromine

This element is used for agriculture, but it is possible that when used it can run into water streams and lakes which can hurt fish’s nerve system or kill them. As well as human, when you inhale the vaporized element.

  • Lead

This element can be found in water organisms, which can lead to lead poisoning for underwater organisms like fish. For sea animals, phytoplankton gives them a source of oxygen production. But when lead disappears, it affects phytoplankton.

  • Cadmium

This element can be found in sea animals like fish, lobsters and shrimp when exposed to the environment. Fish can get cadmium from water and breathing, but this can be toxic to them.
