Dear Editor,

Hello, my name is Alicia S. and I have written this letter to inform you about the hazardous microplastics intoxicating our lives and why we should eliminate all non-essential plastics.

Plastic is designed to be highly durable. This means that plastic breaks down very slowly or not at all. It may be possible to remove larger plastic particles from the ocean, but microplastics are impossible to get rid of.

There are still issues we see in grocery stores surrounding single-use plastic waste. That said, I am shocked every time I shop at Costco with how many single-use plastic products are sold at Costco and how many products are wrapped in copious amounts of plastic. Single-use Plastics in general are not to be taken lightly.

When plastics enter the ocean, they may seem like they soon go away. Although they may look like they have left they are in the ocean, and all around the world. Microplastics impact ocean life by the tiny to the largest animals in the ocean. Microplastics are very harmful to all!

There is no denying that microplastics are harmful not only for the health of our environment but also for our own well-being.

Lab experiments show that microplastics can also be harmful to animals like copepods, which are small crustaceans. When they fill up their stomachs with microplastics they are less able to take in other nutrients, slowing down their growth and development. microbeads, a type of microplastic, are very tiny pieces of plastic that are in health and beauty products, such as some cleansers and tubes of toothpaste. These tiny particles easily pass through water filtration systems and end up in the ocean and Great Lakes, posing a potential threat to aquatic life.

Just imagine what they are doing to us!

Help keep the environment free of plastic waste. Haven’t we done enough to harm the environment and put our future in danger?

Sincerely,

Alicia S
