Coal Mining in South Africa – What is the plan?
ByCoal mining in South Africa and around the world has many negative effects. The biggest effect of coal mining is the destruction of ecosystems due to the destruction of the natural landscapes. Coal mining is done in two ways and both cause damage. Strip mining does just that, it strips the land to get to the coal and in the process, it destroys land. The other process is underground mining which also damages landscapes. Both types of mining also create a lot of air and water pollution. All of these things combined have a negative effect on the environment and deeply affects the people of South Africa.
My goal is to help South Africans to get away from coal mining. This is a major goal but if we start small and provide people with the tools needed, I believe it will catch on and others will want to look for alternatives to coal. The goal I am going to do is to raise funds for local South African villages that has been affected by coal mining to purchase a solar system.

To help me reach this goal I would need to work with people who can help raise funds and have the experience and expertise to get the job done. The first person I selected is Trevor Noah because he is from South Africa and would have a good understanding of the issues the country has. Also, Trevor Noah created The Trevor Noah Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation based in Johannesburg, South Africa. His foundation is to help educate and teach life skills to young people and I think he would support this project based on wanting to help make things better. The other group I would work with would be Earthjustice. Earthjustice is a group of lawyers and legal experts who could go after the mining companies responsible for the pollution. Instead of taking them to court, Earthjustice could negotiate that the mining companies donate funds to support the villages they damaged by providing solar panels.
