We Should Not Convert Coal-Burning to Hydroelectric

By

To the Editor,

I don’t think we should convert coal-burning plants near bodies of water to hydroelectric plants. In many areas, humans, animals, and the environment are affected by mercury poisoning, and it’s affecting everything in a terrible way and we need to find a way to make energy and hurt little as possible. Some people think converting coal-burning plants to hydroelectric plants will work but here is why it wouldn’t.

This is a coal-burning plant

Us finding a safe way to get mercury out of our water and air is important because if we keep it in it affects our health. When coal-burning plants are on and waste gets dumped in the water, chemicals like mercury get in the environment and creatures like fish. That then passes on to us a causes terrible effects like harming our brain.

Mercury Health Effects

Some people think replacing coal-burning plants with hydroelectric plants will help with this issue but in reality, it will be very harmful to other creatures and the environment. Since hydroelectric plants use flooding of water this will wreck habitats of aquatic creatures. Also if there is already mercury in the water and you’re using that water it just spreads more not making a change at all.

So in conclusion we should not covert coal-burning plants to hydroelectric plants when looking at how it will change mercury poisoning.
