My Action Plan to Help the Bee Population

By

Description of My Problem

Over the past few decades the population of one of the most important pieces of Earth’s ecosystem has rapidly declined and is still declining. The decline in the bee population is a huge problem for Earth. Bees are the top pollinator in the world and nature relies on them in order to grow and thrive. Bees have been dying due to highly toxic Pesticides, habitat loss, parasites and predators, and dieses.

My plan

My plan is to put bee hives into every conservation area in Haldimand and Norfolk then slowly branch out to across Canada. Putting beehives into conservation areas will allow the bee population to build its self back up because of the protection conservation areas offer from harmful chemicals and habitat loss. Putting bee hives into conservation areas will give them a safe place away from the man made problems they are facing.

My Teams

For my plan i have two teams who will carry out different actions. Team A will be raising awareness to my ecological issue and our plan to save the bees. Team B will be executing the plan and taking care of the bees.

Team A consists of Swedish environmental activist, Greta Thunberg, and leader of the green party of Canada, Annamie Paul. I chose these two because they both care deeply for the environment and are not afraid to challenge people to look at the problem at hand and try and persuade them to change their ways. These two can help enlighten people on why they should care for the bees and why they are so crucial for the environment. Greta Is still in school but that doesn’t mean she does not know what she is talking about, she is incredibly passionate and is very educated on the topics she speaks on. Annamie Paul graduated form the University of Ottawa, Princeton university, and the Runnymede Collegiate Institute.

Team B will consist of the Ontario Beekeepers association and the Canadian Honey Council. I chose these two non-profit groups for separate reasons. The Ontario Beekeepers association will help carry out the first two parts of my plan in putting bees in our county then across Ontario and will be a place of information for anyone who has questions. They will information on all things bee keeping. The Canadian Honey Council will help to manage the bee keeping outside of Ontario. They will provide resources and equipment for hives and the beekeepers necessary for executing this plan.

Resources Needed

The resources needed for my plan are stander beekeeping equipment. We will need bottom boards, hive boxes, frames and foundation, an inner cover and an outer cover,  protective clothing, hive tools, entrance reducers and winter protection for the hives. We also will need people with beekeeping experience to checkup on the hives at their respective location. Of course we will also need the conservation areas, they need to agree to this plan for it to work but i am confident most if not all would agree.

Timeline

For the first six months of my operation i plan to have bee hives in every conservation area in Haldimand Norfolk. This should not be too hard considering there are only twelve. For the one year goal, I hope to have bee hives in every conservation area in Ontario. There are currently five hundred located within Ontario. Reaching this goal alone could help the bee population reestablish their numbers. After the one year mark I hope to expand this project outside of Ontario and into the majority of Canada’s four thousand Conservation areas. We won’t be able to reach every single one because some are in climates that bee’s will not be able to live in but if we get protected hives into almost all conservation areas the bee population will finally be able to get back to what it once was.
