Overfishing

By

Overfishing is an issue that occurs when people fish too many fish, it can cause ecosystems to collapse. Overfishing can cause marine life to go extinct. Even overfishing the smallest species of fish can destroy ecosystems. It causes a ripple in the food chain. Overfishing can also cause economic issues. Take the collapse of the cod fisheries in the 1990s. Over 37,000 fishers lost their jobs. Many people had to find new jobs, had to go back to school. All because of overfishing.

The goal is to reduce overfishing, or to stop it completely. Fish need to be caught in smaller amounts. Fishers have huge nets that they use to catch large amounts of fish. This leads to more fish then needed being caught, or other species that were not intended to be caught, to be caught. More laws also need to be put into place. With this plan, marine life will have time to reproduce, there will not be any shortage of fish.

For the teams that I have chosen to help with my goal, the Canadian Wildlife Federation will help me with my goal. The Canadian Wildlife Federation wants to make marine life better. They work towards making the oceans sustainable again. The CEO is Rick Bates. Hes committed to making marine life better. He would help with the goal to reduce overfishing.

The other team that would help me with my goal is the Marine Stewardship Council. They also work towards making the oceans better. The MSC work at fisheries, scientists and industry stakeholders to make sure that the oceans are fished safely. According to the MSC, 34.2% of global fisheries are overfished. They will help me with my goal, they are already working towards it.

To accomplish this goal, we need to bring awareness to this issue. If more people knew about the issue, the easier it would be to recruit more people and help deal with this problem better. We also need to build fisheries and fish safely ourselves. If people see how successful we are by safely fishing, then they would start safely fishing. We need to raise money and raise awareness. Once we have done that, hopefully the overfishing will reduce.

Hopefully, we can raise awareness in a couple of months. But to reduce overfishing, that will take years. Hopefully the Canadian Wildlife Federation would be able to raise awareness, they are a big organization. The MSC would help to build more fisheries. They have already started that, and I hope we can make it bigger.
